Jochen Kaempf: Upper Spencer Gulf is no place for desalination plants

Associate Professor Jochen Kaempf is a marine scientist and oceanographer from Flinders University in South Australia. For the past ten years, Jochen has been intensively studying the nature and dynamics of the Spencer and St Vincent gulfs. When he first heard that desalination plants were being proposed for these sheltered and sensitive locations, he thought the proponents ‘must be crazy’. In this video, Jochen explains why the the slow circulation of water and sensitive ecological systems of the Upper Spencer Gulf make it a completely inappropriate location for the discharge of desalination plant waste-water.
