The most pressing risk facing the Giant Cuttlefish aggregation and fish nurseries of the Upper Spencer Gulf is the proposed development of a desalination plant at Point Lowly. The plant will draw water from Fitzgerald Bay, and output brine and cleaning agents into the sensitive marine ecosystem adjacent. There aremajor discrepancies between the waste dispersal modelling produced in proponent BHP Billiton’s Environmental Impact Statement, and in responses produced by independent oceanographers and experts, including Flinders University’s Prof. Jochen Kaempf. There were over 4000 public responses to the original EIS, such is the level of public concern. Watch the videos below to learn about desalination from international perspectives, bone up on the confirmed risks associated with desalination operation, then TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION!
